The latest news from the music and tech industries
Hi there -
As the news emerged today that Universal is now partnering with TIDAL (question: was TIDAL always an all-caps name??) to explore more artist- and fan-friendly remuneration models, it seems some have been murmuring that the former could even purchase the latter to really shake things up.
In reality, I suspect the truth is that TIDAL is the smallest DSP and therefore the easiest to run tests with. Equally, my cynical side suspects that partnering with these guys over Spotify or Apple Music is a great way to play a divide and conquer move that might make the two dominant DSPs slightly more inclined to get involved and accept change.
I also couldn't help but feel that Spotify's latest financials were received with something of a shrug, where previously much would have been made of them.
It almost feels like their results don't matter at this point, because on some level, they're increasingly being perceived as old news. Or at least, an old model now in need of serious change.
Of course this is all subjective and some of you may well beg to differ. Sometimes though, I feel the biggest indicators are not financial results but cultural indicators. If everyone around you is increasingly showing ambivalence to Spotify as a prospect, you cannot help but think there's change in the air.
For now though, I'm keen to see what Universal with do with the TIDAL partnership. I just sincerely hope Universal is working to deliver a better result for all, on the "a rising tide lifts all ships" philosophy, rather than simply demanding change because its market share is under threat.
Time will tell.
Have a great evening,
D.
๐ถ written whilst listening to an old comp from The Wire magazine of Raster Noton tracks. Often consisting of random static and rhythm bass - and little else - it is minimal in the extreme and yet somehow quite brilliant. No link for you but go search YouTube or your DSP of choice and doubtless the labels super leftfield sounds will be found. I also recommend this primer on the label/collective on the excellent Dub Monitor channel on YouTube.ย
Today, UMG has announced an interesting alliance with Tidal that will see the two companies work together to explore what they call an innovative new economic model for music streaming that might better reward the value provided by artists. On Tuesday (January 31), TIDAL and UMG announced plans to research how, by harnessing fan engagement, music services and platforms can generate greater commercial value for every type of artist.
๐๐ปHot take: a cynic might argue that this is a great way to get Spotify and Apple rattled and rendered suitably more pliable ahead of any renegotiations on this topic.ย ย
The music streaming services ended 2022 with 489 million monthly active users, having added 33 million during Q4. Thatโs 20% growth year-on-year, and itโs 10 million more than Spotify predicted in its guidance for the quarter. 205 million of those listeners were using a paid Spotify subscription, which means 10 million net new additions during Q4 (three million more than its guidance) and year-on-year growth of 14%. Just under 42% of Spotify listeners are now subscribers. What does that mean for the financials? Spotifyโs subscription revenues grew by 18% year-on-year to โฌ2.72bn in Q4 2022, although the quarter-on-quarter growth was only 2%.
๐๐ปHot take: whilst these numbers appear superficially positive, I fear the bigger problem Spotify has to solve is proving its model is actually worthy of long-term investment. Right now, I don't feel that's the case.ย
Following a round of redundancies towards the end of 2022, Utopia has been split into two distinct divisions: Music Services (including acquired businesses such as the UK-based trio of Sentric Music Group, Absolute Label Services, and Proper), plus Royalty Platform, under which sits Utopias in-house tech platform. With that tech platform, which Utopia says monitors streams and airplay of music around the world, Utopia says it aims to be the definitive partner for royalty processing and payments in the music industry.
๐๐ปHot take: objectively it feels like Utopia have over-stretched and are now having to rapidly find efficiencies and focus. This looks like a smart move in that direction.ย
Though Spotify CEO Daniel Ek declined to comment on the specific feature the investor asked about, he didnโt shoot down the idea of Spotify becoming a more social platform. Instead, he replied that social could become โa meaningful driver of creating an even stickier and more engaging experienceโ for the company. The exec was answering an investor question about Spotifyโs recent tests of a โFriends tab,โ which appears in the appโs bottom navigation bar for some subset of Spotifyโs users. Though only an experiment at present, the test already has gained many positive reviews from members of the test group.
๐๐ปHot take: social functions could be a nice feature in Spotify, but frankly a Friends tab is not it. Not for me anyway. I really don't care what friends are listening to right now.ย
WMG has brought stars including Ava Max, Why Dont We, Royal Blood and Twenty One Pilots to Roblox. WMG made an investment in Roblox in 2020, joining a $520m Series H investment round in Roblox Corporation at a purchase price of $45.00 per share. Roblox reported daily active users (DAUs) of 61.5 million, for the month of December 2022, up 18% year-over-year.
๐๐ปHot take: the key detail to note here is Warner's investment in Roblox, which certainly lends more context to the events the company is now hosting in there.ย
Big Tech take note: In what looks like a meaningful and long overdue reforming step, the European Commission has committed to dial up its monitoring of how data protection authorities at the EU Member State level enforce the blocs flagship data protection rules committing to regular checks on large scale General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) cases. Checks that could help address long standing criticism that enforcement of the GDPR is too weak and plodding to put meaningful checks on Big Tech.
๐๐ปHot take: long time readers will know I've commented in the past that GDPR has been a rather toothless directive, so this change is welcome news.ย
According to CNBC, Googlers are currently testing an AI chatbot of their own called Apprentice Bard, which offers responses to questions posed using natural language just like ChatGPT. Bard is built using Googles LaMDA technology, which is itself similar to the GPT-series of AI language models that ChatGPT itself relies on. (Google has used LaMDA in the past to power similar chatbot demos at I/O, like its conversation with Pluto.)
๐๐ปHot take: further evidence that Google is most definitely shaken by the arrival of ChatGPT.
Today, Netflix announced that Premium members can now download content on more devices and use spatial audio for over 700 titles. Both upgraded features are available at no extra cost. Premium subscribers are able to download Netflix titles to watch offline on six devices at a time. Previously, the plan would only allow downloads on four supported devices at once. For large families looking to travel this year, this upgraded feature will probably be very convenient.
๐๐ปHot take: interesting to now see video streaming services working to find those points of difference on the premium tier.ย
In the enshittification cycle, a platform lures in users by giving them a good deal at first, then it lures in business customers (advertisers, sellers, performers) by shifting the surplus from users to them; finally, it takes all the surplus for itself, turning the whole thing into a pile of shit
๐๐ปHot take: this "enshittification" term was a new one on me, but this is a terrific read about that process and how podcasts have proven resistant to it. Big thanks to Alec @ Brassland for the link!ย
Nonalcoholic beer has entered its golden age. In five years, it has grown into a booming industry with big names and independent upstarts.
๐๐ปHot take: amazing how far the non-alcoholic beer market has come. Most people I know now seem to consume more of this than the alcoholic variety (which, admittedly, might say more about my friends and how much they had previously been overdoing it!)
In a win for workplace dignity, a French high court recently decreed that businesses cannot force their employees to participate in supposedly enjoyable activities.
๐๐ปHot take: as a proud loather of "enforced fun" I am all for this ๐
