The latest news from the music and tech industries
Hi there -

With AI dominating headlines so much of late, one might argue that Web3 has, well, wound up something like this:
Web3
In truth, things have still been ticking over, and today Spotify was the next to jump aboard by announcing it was testing a gating system in which playlists could only be accessed by people holding specific NFTs.

I've said plenty of times before now that I prefer the concept of NFT as utility, rather than as, for example, music format. Companies like Medallion are showing a huge amount of common sense in that space, recognising the need for a kind of "Web2.5" on-ramp to ensure Joe Public can get access without navigating the wallets, the crypto and all the other technical blockades Web3 can present.

With Spotify's test though, I struggle to see what the end game is, beyond potentially just retaining Web3 music endeavours to this platform rather than any of the others out there. It gives those running NFT-led enterprises a feature to offer... but beyond that, well, who knows.

The exciting aspect of Web3 is that it will allow artists unparalleled control. If you factor in the likes of Lens, you also have a potentially compelling end game in which social media can carry all the revenue-generation abilities within it, thus providing infinitely more means to earn money.

With all that in mind then, I can only feel cynical about whatever Spotify is trying to test here. That said, it is still good exposure for Web3 in general, further legitimising it.

Perhaps there are learnings to gain from this, but in truth I see Web3 as the next thing, not unlike AI, to replace the incumbents. AI might unseat Google and co, and in theory Web3 might achieve the same around major labels, one day. Or perhaps even Spotify itself?

Or, of course, the new boss might just look the same as the old boss.

I will continue watching with interest.

Have a great weekend,

D.

🎶 written whilst listening to 'Copendium', Julian Cope's compilation of tracks he'd previously written about in his legendary book of the same name, which I would argue every home should have. It contains one of my favourite pieces of music writing ever, about Blue Cheer, in which Cope describes the lead guitarist as having "almost every solo commencing as though [he] had been caught on tape actually in the act of giving up guitar playing" 😆
Stories from the Music Industry:
Spotify Is Testing Token-Enabled Music Playlists
Music streaming Spotify is testing a new service called "token-enabled playlists," which allows holders of non-fungible tokens (NFT) to connect their wallets and listen to curated music. Currently, the service is available to token holders within the Fluf, Moonbirds, Kingship and Overlord communities. The curated playlists will be actively updated during the three-month testing period and can only be accessed by community members via a unique link.

👆🏻Hot take: I really hate the use of NFTs to create a kind of upper class of those who can afford the daft asking prices. Spotify's engagement with this just feels wrong to me. This isn't what Web3 music is about.
By expanding the Sounds experience, Snapchat is making it easier and faster for Snapchatters to discover and share the music they love with friends, said Manny Adler, head of Music Strategy at Snap, in a statement. Snapchat has also created a unique opportunity for artists to reach a valuable and engaged audience, while then also leading fans to listen to the full song on streaming services.

👆🏻Hot take: a smart move from Snap here. I still wonder what the future holds for this platform. We've written off things in the past for not keeping up, only to have them come back around and dominate. Is Snap yet to have its real moment in the sun?
In 2017 we covered theexpansion of AI mastering startup Landr into music distribution. However, that transition can work the other way too, with the latest example being DistroKid. Yesterday it unveiled its new intelligent mastering tool Mixea, which it will be offering alongside its existing distribution and artist services. Mixea is free to try with a single track, but will then cost $99 a year for unlimited access.

👆🏻Hot take: I commented a good while ago now that distribution was becoming the add-on every creator company was using to park its tanks on the major labels' lawns. So it continues here - though in my experience, AI mastering still has some way to go before being remotely comparable to a human mastering engineer.
Decentralised streaming service Audius has a new way for artists to sign up and get verified on its platform: by using their TikTok profiles. They can now choose to link their TikTok account while registering for Audius, porting across their handle, profile picture and information, as well as their verification status. The integration also means artists uploading music to Audius will be able to share it on to TikTok more easily.

👆🏻Hot take: a logical move, I suppose. I am more curious if other platforms might engage with this approach.
Podcasts are coming to YouTube Music. The streaming music service plans to add podcasts in the near future, YouTubes head of podcasting, Kai Chuk, told Ariel Shapiro at Hot Pod Summit this morning. The addition will pit YouTube Music even more directly against Spotify, which has looked to podcasts and big exclusives like Joe Rogan as a way to retain users and grow its audience.

👆🏻Hot take: Google's achilles heel with products is that it often has multiple apps competing with one another. I would assume that Google Podcasts will shutter therefore, and focus shifts to this. No bad thing if so - arguably overdue.
Stories from the Broader World of Tech:
European Commission bans TikTok on staff devices
Staff working at the European Commission have been ordered to remove the TikTok app from their phones and corporate devices. The commission said it was implementing the measure to "protect data and increase cybersecurity".

👆🏻Hot take: a bellwethers go, this is a bad one for TikTok.
We conclude that Ms. Kashtanova is the author of the Works text as well as the selection, coordination, and arrangement of the Works written and visual elements. That authorship is protected by copyright, it explained in a letter. However, the Midjourney images are not the product of human authorship so by themselves are not protected. The letter goes into much more detail about the decision, and how the Copyright Office sees works (in this case graphic novels) made using creative AI tools.

👆🏻Hot take: a landmark decision here, concluding that images created via Midjourney are not covered under copyright. Where might that leave AI music, I wonder? 🤔
The federal judge in New York overseeing a class-action lawsuit against Dapper Labs ruled Wednesday to deny the companys motion to dismiss the suit, writing that the plaintiffs claims that Dapper Labs NBA-branded Top Shot Moments NFTs are securities and that selling them without first registering with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) was a violation of federal securities laws are plausible.

👆🏻Hot take: I'm no legal expert but I would imagine this might carry ramifications far beyond NBA Top Shot if the judgement rules against Dapper Labs.

Chef Shares All the Best Things to Make in Your Air Fryer
As a chef, I was hesitant to get an air fryer at first, but now I can't get enough of it. I make everything from grilled cheese to French toast in it.

👆🏻Hot take: I still don't own an air fryer, but after reading this I am wavering, hahaha. Skip the first few and make straight for the grilled cheese and cakes. Ohhhh yes. 🤤
“I wasn’t happy at my old company, started job searching this summer, received two job offers relatively quickly, and accepted both.”

👆🏻Hot take: I can only admire people with the brass neck both to do this and bring that much stress on themselves. A curious side-effect of remote working though, for sure.
A shot in the Season 3 finale featuring three Roy siblings has stunned viewers, with some even comparing it to Renaissance art. Experts break it down.

👆🏻Hot take: I love this article, highlighting *that* shot in Succession's season 3 finale and why it is so brilliant.
